I was teaching n8n automation to the media cell of a government organisation, on a two-week programme. The moment nodes and JSON appeared on the screen, faces went pale. I know that look. It is the look of people deciding that this part is for engineers.
Here is what I told them. "You do not need to understand any of this. Talk to ChatGPT by voice about what you want. Ask it to write you a meta prompt. Hand that prompt to Claude. Claude will produce the n8n JSON file."
In the morning that team had never heard the word JSON. By the afternoon they were importing workflows they had "written".
That is the whole point of meta-prompting: it breaks the wall of technical language. And the confession is that I found it through laziness, not genius. After my seven-part brief became the standard in my sessions, someone asked the obvious question: "Who writes a brief that long every time?" The honest answer was: not me. The AI does.
You do not write your own land deed
When you buy land, do you write the deed yourself? No. You go to a lawyer and say what you want: who sells, who buys, how much, what conditions. The lawyer renders it into legal language, in the right format, with the right clauses, because the lawyer knows that language better than you.
The AI knows prompt language better than you. So give it the job of writing the prompt. Meta-prompting is exactly that: AI writing prompts for AI. You bring the context. It brings the language. Lawyer and client, each doing their own job.
The three-step flow I run every day
This is my own routine, and I teach it the same way in a government media cell and a corporate boardroom.
- Talk the idea through by voice. Walking, in traffic, phone held like a call. "Listen, I am thinking about a corporate training proposal. The client is like this. I have three modules in mind. Ask me questions and sharpen my thinking." Fifteen minutes of talking gets me somewhere an hour of typing would not, and every sentence becomes context the AI now holds.
- In the same thread, ask for the meta prompt. Type: "From everything we discussed, write a complete structured prompt with Role, Task, Context, Rules and Output format, so that I can paste it into another AI and it does the job in one pass."
- Take the prompt to the right tool. Image work goes to an image model. A long document or a system design goes to Claude. Video goes to a video tool. The prompt is portable; the tool is whichever one is best at that job this quarter.
Notice that in this flow I have not written one line of "prompt". I have talked and I have copied. The context was mine; the language was the machine's.
The generator prompt
If you want to start with typing instead of voice, this is the starter I hand out.
"You are an expert prompt engineer. I want to get a job done: [describe it in your own words, as messy as you like]. First ask me up to five questions you cannot write a good prompt without. After my answers, write a complete prompt with Role, Task, Context, Reasoning, Rules, Output format and Stop condition, written so that I can paste it into any AI and get the job done in one pass."
The real moment is when the AI asks you something you had not thought about. "What is the budget range of your target audience?" And you realise you never decided. At that second it stops being a tool and becomes a thinking partner.
Never run it blind
A prompt written by AI is not automatically correct. Before you run it, read it once. Are your real numbers in it? Your real context? Sometimes the model fills in details you never gave it. The AI may write the deed; the client still reads it before signing.
And save the good ones. Open a document, sort by category: email, report, content, design. In three months you will have a prompt bank trained on your kind of work, which no free prompt list on the internet can give you.
Practice
What to do on Monday
- Pick one job you repeat every week: a report, a client update, a content plan.
- Run the generator prompt above. Answer its five questions honestly.
- Paste the final prompt into a new chat and test it. Read it first.
- If it works, it is the first entry in your prompt bank. Name the file today.
What is the one technical wall in your work that you have been calling "for engineers"?
